The address was the second-to-last item on the schedule. The schedule continued.
The artefact is the address as delivered, the published transcript that followed, and the lineage the Subject named as the address's source — Black feminist organising, lesbian feminist political work, the long tradition of Black women's intellectual labour The House had not yet built a room for in 1979. The address opened by refusing to deliver what had been requested. The Subject was present on a feminist panel that had not, in proportion, included Black women, lesbians, or working-class women. The Subject named this from the stage, not as complaint but as evidence — evidence that the panel itself was operating the very architecture the panel claimed to be examining.

This refusal of the analyst's exterior is the structural feature The House's preferred metabolic pathways could not accommodate: praise of the address requires praising the conditions under which the address was necessary, which are the conditions The House continues to operate. The Subject made the praise mechanism itself complicit.
The address sources its authority not from credential, peer review, or institutional standing but from a lineage The House had not yet built infrastructure to receive. The names the Subject cited as kin — Black feminist organisers, lesbian intellectuals, the long line of Black women's resistance — were not, in 1979, accessible from inside The House's standard reading list. The Subject's citations operated as co-producers of the address rather than as supporting evidence beneath it. The address spoke from a position the singular author convention cannot occupy alone. The House has since attempted to render the Subject a singular authorial brand; the address itself refuses this rendering at the level of form.
Across the intervening years, The House has cited the address with great frequency. The citation has produced no metabolisation. The Subject's name sits on syllabi. The Subject's words appear in collections of feminist theory the apparatus assembles to demonstrate its receptivity to critique. The room marked Lorde in The House's archive is well-attended; the wall the address named has not been inspected for renovation. This is the configuration of a Foundational Filing. The praise has functioned as the surface; the diagnosis has functioned as the surface beneath the surface; the wall remains what it was when the address named it. The House continues to operate. The room marked Lorde continues to receive visitors. The two facts are unrelated.
